Pediatric Dental Crowns

Pediatric dental crowns are custom caps used to restore and protect damaged or decayed children’s teeth, ensuring proper function and appearance. They are durable and help preserve primary teeth until permanent ones emerge. If your child’s dentist has recommended a pediatric dental crown, it’s essential to follow their advice to preserve the health of the affected tooth and maintain your child’s overall oral health.

Benefits of Dental Crowns for Your Child

Frequently Asked Questions

A pediatric dental crown is typically needed when a child has a cavity or abnormality that poses a risk to oral health. In most cases, cavities can be remedied with a dental filling, however, if it is more severe, a dental crown may be required. In the case that an accident occurs, a chipped or cracked tooth may be the result, which may also require a pediatric dentist to place a pediatric dental crown.

Note that the pediatric crown isn't attached to the gums of the child's tooth. As a result, the crown will fall out with the baby's tooth when the time comes. The adult teeth slowly dissolve the baby tooth's root, causing it to loosen and fall out naturally.

Unlike adult crowns, most pediatric crowns can be fitted in one go. Our pediatric dentist will first numb the area around the tooth and the tooth itself. Please let us know if your child becomes more anxious at the dentist as we can also provide sedation during this stage.
Once everything is numb, a dental dam is placed to isolate the working tooth. This little piece of latex also protects your baby's cheeks, tongue and gums. To continue the procedure, our dentist will remove all cavities and shape the tooth with a crown using a special drill.
Finally, the crown is placed and checked to make sure it fits properly.
